Alkanet dye can not particularly soluble in water, and for best results an alcohol extraction is needed. The colouring matter in alkanet root is anchusin, napthaquinone derivative containing three hydroxy 1 groups, two of which are phenolic. As alkanet is a napthaquinone based dye theoretically it is expected to behave as a disperse dye. The colors that are produced on mordanted fabric and yarns are basically shades of grey, lavender and purple when used at 75-100% WOF. The colors achieved are beautiful but have moderate light fastness.
